Meet the Herd
Two miniature horses, two miniature mules, and four distinct personalities. Meet the herd who share our days and inspire our artwork.
Rowdy

Rowdy is an 11-year-old silver buckskin miniature horse with charisma and a love of adventure. Brave and curious, he enjoys trail driving and showing, especially trail classes with new obstacles to explore. He loves meeting new people and animals. As the herd leader, he directs everything that happens on both sides of the fence.
Hot Rod

Hot Rod is a 13-year-old black-and-white miniature horse with a sweet, gentlemanly nature. A seasoned competitor in halter, jumping, and driving classes, he is also Rowdy’s best friend and driving teammate. Away from the show ring, he enjoys snuggles from everyone.
Sandy

Sandy is a 12-year-old red dun miniature mule who joined our herd through a rescue. A sweet introvert, he has overcome many of his initial challenges and can now pull a cart, although he prefers ground driving and dragging small branches. He also likes to show his pasture mate, Jung, how to behave, especially for the veterinarian and farrier.

Jung

Jung is a 4-year-old miniature mule and the youngest member of the herd. His primitive markings are just visible through his dark coat. Outgoing and sensitive, he has come out of his shell with encouragement from a herd that welcomes his extroversion. He is being slowly reintroduced to driving for enjoyment. Scratches and oats are among his favorite things.

Poco

Poco was a lovely, stoic, and noble half-Pinto Arabian horse with beautiful tricolor bay coloring. As the benevolent herd leader, he exerted his authority only when necessary. He demanded perfection of himself and was equally demanding of his rider. He enjoyed the exacting nature of arena work and Western dressage.

Tril

Tril was a graceful, sensitive, and kind flea-bitten Arabian horse with an intuitive understanding of both horses and people. As Poco’s best friend and second in command, he bridged relationships among herd members and seemed to know what they needed before a problem became visible. He brought that same sensitivity to his riders, seeming to read their minds, and was a joy to ride. He enjoyed being with people.

Mickie

Mickie was a jovial, reliable, and down-to-earth large Pinto pony, a loud tricolor bay with a gorgeous, thick mane and tail. As the lowest-ranking member of the herd, he took everything in stride, often with comical results, and never troubled himself with details. He enjoyed the trails and was a trusted trail mount and lesson horse.

Keno

Keno, portrait by Patricia Mayer.
Keno was a sweet, sensitive, and tough Pinto pony with a flashy sorrel-and-white splash-patterned coat. He was a study in contrasts: he enjoyed the company of people but preferred horses to remain on the other side of the fence. He was intended to be a lesson horse, but an injury ended his riding career. He continued to enjoy showing in hand.
