About the Artist

Patricia (Trish) Mayer is a self-taught artist working primarily in colored pencil, specializing in equine portraiture that bridges classical realism and contemporary expressionism. Motivated by revealing the unique personality and emotion of each equine, Trish redefines the boundaries of modern colored pencil art through a powerful, unblended aesthetic. The core of her practice lies in a disciplined, additive philosophy: no blending and no erasing. Every mark on the paper is permanent and deliberate. While her drawings maintain striking, lifelike anatomical precision, they crackle with unexpected color temperature — intricately layered contrasting hues applied directly to the surface. This technique utilizes optical color mixing, a method favored by the Impressionist masters, where the viewer's eye blends the colors from a distance, capturing not just the physical form of the horse, but its movement, light, and untamed emotional spirit. Through her art, she hopes to encourage others to view animals as individuals
Trish began drawing as a child and was encouraged by her mother, who also had a talent for drawing. While living in the Netherlands, she was exposed to the many great works of art at the museums her family visited throughout Europe.
Today she is inspired by her two miniature horses and two miniature mules and lives on a farm in rural Virginia.
